Osteoarthritis: What I Tell My Patients About Managing Joint Pain

Introduction: Osteoarthritis Doesn't Mean You Have to Stop Moving

As a physiotherapist, one of the biggest myths I hear about osteoarthritis is that painful joints should be rested as much as possible.

In reality, movement is one of the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and affects millions of Australians. It occurs when the cartilage within a joint gradually changes over time, often leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Commonly affected areas include the knees, hips, hands, and spine.

While osteoarthritis can make everyday activities more challenging, it doesn’t mean you have to give up walking, exercising, gardening, or enjoying an active lifestyle.

At Flexout Health, our physiotherapists work with people across Canberra from our clinics in Woden, Queanbeyan, and Gungahlin to help them reduce pain, improve movement, and stay independent. Here are the key things I discuss with my patients living with osteoarthritis.

1. Movement Is One of the Best Medicines

When joints become painful, it’s natural to want to avoid using them. However, prolonged rest often leads to increased stiffness, weaker muscles, and reduced mobility.

Regular movement helps lubricate the joints, maintain flexibility, and strengthen the muscles that support them.

As physiotherapists, we develop tailored exercise programs that help improve joint function without aggravating symptoms. Activities such as walking, cycling, swimming, and strengthening exercises are often highly beneficial.

The goal isn’t to eliminate every ache and pain—it’s to help you move better and do more of the activities you enjoy.

“Strong muscles help support painful joints and can significantly improve day-to-day function.”

2. Strength Matters More Than You Think

One of the most effective ways to manage osteoarthritis is through strengthening exercise.

When the muscles surrounding a joint become stronger, they absorb more load and reduce stress on the joint itself. This is particularly important for weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips.

Many of my patients are surprised to find that strengthening exercises can actually reduce pain over time.

A structured exercise program can improve mobility, confidence, balance, and overall quality of life while helping to slow the decline in physical function that often accompanies osteoarthritis.

3. Understanding Pain Helps Reduce Fear

A common misconception is that pain always means damage is occurring.

With osteoarthritis, pain levels don’t always match what we see on scans or X-rays. Some people with significant joint changes experience very little pain, while others with mild changes may have more symptoms.

Part of my role as a physiotherapist is helping patients understand their condition and what contributes to their pain.

When people better understand osteoarthritis, they often feel more confident staying active and participating in rehabilitation.

Knowledge can be a powerful tool in reducing fear and improving long-term outcomes.

4. Small Lifestyle Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Managing osteoarthritis isn’t just about exercises performed in the clinic.

Simple changes at home can have a significant impact on joint health. Maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, taking regular movement breaks, and pacing activities throughout the day can all help manage symptoms.

We work with patients to develop practical strategies that fit their lifestyle and goals.

The best treatment plan is one that is realistic, sustainable, and tailored to the individual.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Many people wait until their symptoms become severe before seeking help.

The earlier osteoarthritis is managed, the easier it is to maintain strength, mobility, and independence.

At Flexout Health, our physiotherapists support clients across Woden, Queanbeyan, and Gungahlin with personalised treatment plans designed to help them stay active and keep doing the things they love.
